If you have been keeping an eye on the news in recent months, you will have seen that back in November 2022, the Chancellor confirmed there were to be changes in the National Living Wage and Minimum Wage for 2023. The new rates, listed below, will come into effect from 1st April 2023.
Speaking to the Parliament last year, the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, said:
“I am accepting the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission to increase it next year by 9.7 per cent”
Hunt added, “That means, from April 2023, the hourly rate will be £10.42, which represents an annual pay rise worth over £1,600 pounds to a full-time worker”
Here is a breakdown of minimum wage increases for 2023:
- National Living Wage (aged 23 or over): from £9.50 to £10.42
- Minimum wage aged 21 to 22: from £9.18 to £10.18
- Minimum wage aged 18 to 20: from £6.83 to £7.49
- Minimum wage for under-18s: From £4.81 to £5.28
- Apprentice rate: £4.81 to £5.28
While these minimum wage figures apply to all workers, the
Living Wage Foundation has also calculated the ‘Real Living Wage’ (which is the figure employers can voluntarily commit to) is £10.90 in 2023.
According to the Foundation’s website, there are now more than 12,000 UK businesses taking part in this scheme.
